Will friendster up up and fly?

Friendster, the once leading social networking website is losing its ground to myspace and facebook. Couple of years ago, when friendster was the number one social networking platform, google offered to buy friendster for less than $1 bn; Friendster’s owner believed that his internet property was worth more than $1 bn. Could you imagine if Friendster nowadays if it were owned by google?

Frankly speaking, I, myself, am an avid user of friendster. Be it checking a friend’s picture or writing a testimonial, I might login to friendster once a day on the average. I would be among the first people cheering if there were such thing as friendster.google.com. Some of the things that I don’t like about friendster is that it’s painstakingly slow, not stable, and buggy. Friendster Brand + Google’s wealth = Great Product. Yummy. Hmm… I would like to see if ajax can be implemented with Friendster so it can be as interactive as Gmail or Flickr. Now, friendster is trailing MySpace and Facebook. Rupert Murdoch said that MySpace could now be sold for $6 billion — about a 10x return on the original $580 million that News Corp. paid for. What about friendster? I bet it’s less than $300 million. Currently, there are plenty of social networking sites. You can search google or wikipedia, and it’s gonna return a long list of websites. Ironically, Friendster is just one of it.

Do you think it’s finished? Probably it was a good idea to sell friendster a long time ago, but hold your breath. Read this out loud: Friendster has just been awarded a patent on social networking. Understand the implication of that? It means, it can license its intellectual property to any social networking websites. So sites like myspace have to pay Friendster to keep their business running or start to discuss with their lawyers how to counteract friendster.

Friendster is breathing again. Feewwh, sometimes US Patent and Trademark office can be a pain in the neck.

Wait, before closing this entry, I would like to share some good facts about the popularity of some social networking sites:

  • www.myspace.com (from news corp): North America
  • www.friendster.com : South East Asia
  • www.orkut.com (from google) : Brazil
  • www.hi5.com : India

Cool stuff, huh. So how’re you gonna create your network?

    hmm….

but somehow, i think myspace would still thrive no matter what Friendster comes up with.

I think those different social networking sites targeted (although maybe not purposefully) different demographics.
From my personal stalkerific observation, Friendster’s user base is primarily Indonesians, Malaysians, Singaporeans, Filipinos, and some HKers, plus the rest of the world. MySpace users are primarily American high school / middle school students, with their obnoxious background images and music, while Facebook’s users are mostly Americans who are in still 18ish - 20something and fairly more educated.
Personally, I use Friendster largely to reconnect with old friends from back home / new friends I meet in Indonesia, while I use Facebook to keep myself updated with my college friends.
