China: Be arrogant when you’re strong
Nowadays, China is a very BIG, humongous, giant country. I really mean it. Not only because of its size, but also it’s economic growth. Here is the summary of some stories I found in the Economist.
CHINA EXPANDS TO AFRICA
To fulfil its needs of raw resources, China has moved to Africa, one of the areas that the West has missed. Chinese trade with Africa has grown since then, even exceeds the trade between Africa - Europe.
The West thinks that Chinese involvement in Africa will disrupt the effort to tackle corruption and human rights problem in Africa. China doesn’t care. It even says that it is ready to veto all decissions in UN Security Council which block its business interest in Africa.
One of the conditions that China gives in order for China to invest its capital is, the African nation must adopt One China policy. Of course, all of the times, these African Nations can’t say no, or rather they are in the position of not having any options.

MY VIEW
I like the idea of helping other countries get out of their vicious cycle of poverty. Look at the west, what have they done to Africa? Once they want to help, BUT with restraining conditions. IMF says, “you have to get rid of corruptions, bring the genocide case to the courts, etc”. This conditional love somehow doesn’t work effective enough.
I look at Singapore and what the first Prime Minister has done. In the past, there were a lot of riots and clashes among people from different races. Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) came out with a good idea:
Gives each of the citizen a living place (house) and a job, so they will think twice before they are involved in a chaos.
Brilliant, and he walks the talks.
At the end of the post, this is what I will say to China the country which is arrogant because it’s strong:
Go China go. When you’re in Africa, you can consider yourself as a company. Thus you have to practice Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by giving back to the ‘estranged’ continent, so that it can grow and go out from its vicious cycle of poverty and social problems.

Out of curiosity, are the conditions imposed by China much stricter than IMF’s SAP ? Huhu.. pardon my personal bias against China but I suspect they definitely have more strings attached to whatever packages they are offering to Africa.
Sadly, it is so easy for me to scorn foreign trades without realizing how much the African countries could have been worse without it. If China can provide the market for African’s natural resources, providing the revenue is used to develop their secondary and tertiary industries, it will definitely do a great deal to African economies.
Oh man.. this also means we all have to learn Chinese sooner or latter..

Yeah, pepi, you’re right. In my opinion, majority of the people in Africa, so called the ordinary people, do not get the benefits of this investment, especially if corruption is deep-rooted. One research shows that, though the number of job vacancies in Africa increases, the number of unemployment doesn’t decrease. One of the reasons is because China bring its home talents to do its job in Africa. Therefore, one of the challenges for Africa is how it can get chinese technological knowledge and expertise transferred so that local talents can self sustain the long-term growth.
China will do anything just to serve its huge demand of raw resources. As the west ignores Africa because of its history in violence against human right, China saw that as an opportunity not to be missed. China doesn’t scare with UN as it holds a veto right, a special privelege not any country has.
